It is a new experience for me to be a novice again and facing a steep learning curve towards some form of competence. This time I am referring to writing and publishing my eBook novels: The Beirut Conspiracy and A Perfect Conspiracy.
This new revolution in the convergence of publishing and technology (eBooks and self-publishing) is a steep learning curve for everyone; especially me. I guess that’s the nature of disruptive innovations, we all start from square one. But the interesting part of the learning is the speed at which you can learn and apply that learning.
For example, in doing a ton of reading on eBook publishing and marketing one of the keys in growing sales and distribution for a new author is pricing. The objective, if you are in the game for the long haul, is to build readership and a loyal fan base. And to build a fan base without a well recognized name takes effort,persistence and a good strategy.
It’s relatively easy to create one best seller if you are a famous rock star or politician and your name is recognized around the world or with a large group of people. But very few follow with a second book and make a career out of writing. Mostly they are capitalizing on their moment of fame.
For the majority of us that is not the case. We want to build a writing career from the ground up and pricing is a definite and proven tool. The rule of thumb for now (which may change) is to price low and make it easy for people to learn about you. In strategy terms, drastically reduce the barrier to entry into a very crowded market.
Once we learned a lesson like this in the old world of publishing it would take many months to apply a pricing change because of physical inventory, distribution agreements, royalty agreements, etc. In fact, flexible market pricing was not possible in the old world of physical publishing.
Speed and flexibility is one of the virtues of the new age of digital publishing and internet distribution. Basically a book can be priced according to the law of supply and demand; low for entry and building brand awareness and higher as the demand grows. And the author controls the pricing strategy!
