I don’t care how poor a man is; if he has family, he’s rich. ~Dan Wilcox and Thad Mumford, “Identity Crisis,” M*A*S*H
The role of business person, whether it be small business owner, middle manager or senior executive, is difficult in so many ways. Sometimes just getting to work is a pain, with traffic or crowded smelly subways. And then there are customer complaints, employee issues, quality problems, financial headaches and funding, not to mention government regulations and of course taxes! It is a tough role, but an important one because business and those who work every day drive our economy forward and help build a better future for our children and grandchildren.
But to be honest, sometimes the job is harder at home than at work. Have you ever found the situation at home so overwhelming that you just couldn’t wait to get to work for some peace and quiet? I know it sounds odd, but parenting, leadership and role modelling at home is probably more difficult, and definitely more important than at work.
The difficult bit comes from the fact that while you may be tired after a day at work, that really doesn’t matter to the family. They need you, NOW! They need your time, your attention, your listening, your understanding, your advice, your coaching, your humour and your wisdom. There is no time off from the responsibilities of mother, father, husband, wife, partner, friend, brother or sister. Work is often long hours. Family is 27/7/365. But you do get paid overtime; in love, respect, pride and knowing that you are building the future.
Work is easy. At work we have processes, best practices, check lists, support staff, manuals, training and a whole host of support. At home it’s different. Where’s the training manual to help a young son who gets bullied at school and who’s self esteem is at rock bottom?Where is the best practice for a daughter who totally messed up during that important piano recital? Where’s the video on how to deal with a frustrated spouse or partner who is feeling neglected or not important?
There is one place to look for solutions to both work and home challenges.
